Mumtalakat’s CEO and Sudanese Ambassador in the Kingdom of Bahrain Discuss “Khairat Bahrain”
Mr Mahmood H. Alkooheji, Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company (Mumtalakat), the sovereign wealth fund of the Kingdom, met today with the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Bahrain, HE Ebrahim Mohamed Al Hasan. Present at the meeting were Mr Mohamed ElMoutaz, Embassy Counsellor, Mr Mohamed Abdulqader, Khairat Project Manager and Mr Ahmed Baqer. The meeting reflected on economic cooperation between Bahrain and Sudan in addition to the latest developments of “Khairat Bahrain,” Mumtalakat’s agricultural investment in Sudan.
Marking the sovereign wealth fund’s first investment in agriculture outside the Kingdom of Bahrain, Khairat Bahrain is located in the world’s richest expanse of groundwater (the great Nubian Sandstone Basin) occupying an area of approximately 100,000 feddans (400 sqkm).
Mahmood H. Alkooheji, CEO of Mumtalakat commented, “I would like to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Republic of Sudan, represented by HE Ebrahim Mohamed Al Hasan for his warm welcome and his continuous support for our investment in Sudan, in addition to the Sudanese government’s strong endorsement. The project is currently underway, and we expect to see positive outcomes in the next year. This will contribute to the growth and enhancement of the Kingdom’s food security system both in terms of agriculture and livestock.”
He added: “We invest in and for Bahrain as we always seek to invest in sectors that contribute to the development of the Kingdom’s economy. In the Arabian Gulf region alone, around 70% of our food consumption is imported. That is why the food and agriculture sector is one of the key areas of focus for us.”
